The man-made 72 acre lake is home to trout, bass, and catfish. The lake is maintained by New Mexico Game and Fish department and surrounded by the Gila National Forest and is wonderful for boating. No homes, cabins or hotels are directly on the shore so there is nothing to spoil this lakes natural beauty or its use by local wildlife. In the winter you might see a bald eagle which fishes here or various other birds including osprey, king fishers, herons, and ducks. No cabins or hotels also have a view of the lake but the Lake Roberts Cabins & General Store is just a short walk to overlook this beautiful jewel of the Gila. There are a few trails for day hiking from the lake including a trail around the south side of the lake. If you wish to fish or boat the General Store carries fishing licenses, tackle, and boats for rent.
The 93-mile Trail of the Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway beckons you to experience the beauties of southwestern New Mexico. Walk where the spirits of all the people - miners, homesteaders, Indians, Spanish explorers, mountain men who have passed through this area left their mark. And, like those who came before, the beauty of the surroundings will leave its mark on you.
